What percent of Americans have no debt?
Around 23% of Americans are debt free, according to the most recent data available from the Federal Reserve. That figure factors in every type of debt, from credit card balances and student loans to mortgages, car loans and more.
Fewer than one quarter of American households live debt-free. Learning ways to tackle debt can help you get a handle on your finances.
Debt type | Average balance (2023, Q3) | Total Balance (2023, Q4) |
---|---|---|
Auto loan | $23,792 | $1.61 trillion |
Credit card debt | $6,501 | $1.13 trillion |
Student loan debt | $38,787 | $1.6 trillion |
Total debt | $104,215 | $17.50 trillion |
If you have multiple credit cards and loans and feel overwhelmed by debt, you're not alone. Around 80% of Americans are in debt, and escaping it can be challenging. Moreover, Americans are accumulating debt due to factors like inflation and high credit card interest rates after saving more during the pandemic.
A stunning new Bankrate survey of 1,030 individuals finds that more than half of American adults (56%) lack sufficient savings to shoulder an unexpected $1,000 expense.
It's no wonder just 23% of Americans say they live debt free, according to the Federal Reserve. What's clearer than the exact percentage of Americans who carry zero debt, mortgage included, is that debt and mental health are intertwined.
Between mortgage loans, credit cards, student loans, and car loans, it's not uncommon for the typical American to have one or more types of debt. The ones who are living debt-free may seem like a rarity, but they aren't special or superhuman, nor are they necessarily wealthy.
Around 23% of Americans are debt free, according to the most recent data available from the Federal Reserve. That figure factors in every type of debt, from credit card balances and student loans to mortgages, car loans and more. The exact definition of debt free can vary, though, depending on whom you ask.
Men have 2% more credit card debt than women. Men have 20% more personal loan debt than women. Men have 16.3% more auto loan debt than women. Men have 9.7% more mortgage debt than women.
Who owns the most U.S. debt? Around 70 percent of U.S. debt is held by domestic financial actors and institutions in the United States. U.S. Treasuries represent a convenient, liquid, low-risk store of value.
How much debt is ok?
Debt-to-income ratio is your monthly debt obligations compared to your gross monthly income (before taxes), expressed as a percentage. A good debt-to-income ratio is less than or equal to 36%.
Top Foreign Holders of U.S. Debt
With $1.1 trillion in Treasury holdings, Japan is the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt.
- Japan. Japan has the highest percentage of national debt in the world at 259.43% of its annual GDP. ...
- United States. ...
- China. ...
- Russia.
About 29% of respondents have between $501 and $5,000 in their savings accounts, while the remaining 21% of Americans have $5,001 or more. Few hold much cash in their checking accounts as well. Of those surveyed, 60% report having $500 or less in their checking accounts, while only about 12% have $2,001 or more.
GOBankingRates recently surveyed 1,000 Americans ages 18 and older to learn more about their banking practices and found that 36% have no more than $100 in their savings account. In a similar study conducted in late 2022, 33% of Americans responded they had $100 or less in savings.
Other answers revealed that 15 percent had between $1,000 to $5,000, 10 percent with savings of $5,000 to $10,000, 13 percent boasted $10,000 to $20,000 of cash in their bank accounts while 20 percent had more than $20,000.
So, when you hear about people who have absolutely no debt, live on less than they make, and have a stash of cash for emergencies, you might think they're . . . weird. But living a debt-free life isn't only for a special group of people. It's something anyone can do with hard work and some special characteristics.
Living a debt-free lifestyle can save you money and allow you to start working toward your financial goals. It also can help raise your credit score — and lower your stress levels.
A life free from debt requires careful planning, a lot of work and even a little luck. Depending on your financial situation, a debt-free lifestyle may not be a goal that's easily attainable.
Millionaires prioritize avoiding consumer debt, making wise financial decisions, and aligning spending with long-term goals.
What age has the most debt?
Analysis of the debt share in the U.S. shows that people aged 40-49 hold the largest amount of debt at $4.21 trillion in total. People aged 50-59 have the most credit card debt in total at $0.21 trillion, and people aged 30-39 have the most student loan debt at $0.5 trillion.
More financial security: Monthly debt payments can limit your available cash to save for an emergency fund, invest or even start a business. By freeing up cash in your monthly budget, you'll have more freedom to fortify your financial health and take advantage of new opportunities.
Living on credit cards can't last forever, because eventually you'll reach the end of your credit line. Consider it a stop-gap measure, not a permanent plan. “In a lot of cases, you won't know how long your emergency will last,” says Nitzsche. “It could be a few months, it could be a year.
By January of 1835, for the first and only time, all of the government's interest-bearing debt was paid off. Congress distributed the surplus to the states (many of which were heavily in debt). The Jackson administration ended with the country almost completely out of debt!
How Many Americans Use Credit Cards? According to the Federal Reserve, 82% of U.S. adults had a credit card in 2022. About 73% of Americans have a credit card by age 25, making credit cards the most common first credit experience for young adults.
