Are Americans doing well financially?
By the numbers: 63% of Americans rate their current financial situation as being "good," including 19% of us who say it's "very good." Neither number is particularly low: They're both entirely in line with the average result the past 20 times
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast GDP rising at a 2.0% rate. Estimates ranged from a 0.8% rate to a 2.8% pace. The economy is expanding at a pace above what Fed officials regard as the non-inflationary growth rate of 1.8%. Growth last year accelerated from 1.9% in 2022, and was the fastest in two years.
After inflation, high interest rates, unattainable housing prices and other economic factors, 50 percent of U.S. adults say their overall personal financial situation is worse than it was in November 2020, according to October 2023 Bankrate polling.
WASHINGTON, DC – The OFR published its 2023 Annual Report to Congress today, which concluded that financial stability risks to the U.S. financial landscape have increased since last year and remain elevated in 2023. The report examined these risks to financial stability between October 1, 2022 – September 30, 2023.
Two-thirds (67%) of Americans say that they've cut back on spending, and almost half (45%) say they've put some life plans on hold. A third (35%) have dipped into their savings or investments. And almost two thirds (62%) say that even though they are able to pay their bills, they have little left over for “extras.”
The United States is the undisputed heavyweight when it comes to the economies of the world. America's gross domestic product in 2022 was more than 40% greater than that of China, the world No. 2. Even more striking, U.S. GDP was over five times that of the next two largest economies, Japan and Germany.
The US has pulled further ahead of China in the race for world's biggest economy, thanks in part to a vibrant American consumer. US gross domestic product rose 6.3% in nominal terms — that is, unadjusted for inflation — last year, outpacing China's 4.6% gain.
By the numbers: 63% of Americans rate their current financial situation as being "good," including 19% of us who say it's "very good."
Living paycheck to paycheck by income
According to a recent PYMNTS report, as of November 2022, 76 percent of U.S. adults who make less than $50,000 are living paycheck to paycheck, compared to 65.9 percent of those making $50,000 to $100,000 and 47.1 percent making more than $100,000.
If you are facing financial stress right now, you are not alone. According to a recent Ramsey Solutions study, 34% of survey respondents indicated that they were either facing financial struggles or were actively in crisis.
How many Americans live paycheck to paycheck?
How Many Americans Are Living Paycheck to Paycheck? A 2023 survey conducted by Payroll.org highlighted that 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, a 6% increase from the previous year. In other words, more than three-quarters of Americans struggle to save or invest after paying for their monthly expenses.
Can You Be Financially Stable Earning the Median Income? The median household income in the U.S. is just under $75,000, so it makes sense that the largest proportion of those surveyed (45%) said that it's possible to be financially stable by earning between $50,000 and $100,000 a year.
Trend from 2022 to 2023 in percentage of U.S. adults reporting they have enough money to live comfortably. This has varied between a high of 73% in 2007 to a low of 60% in 2012. It is 64% in the latest reading, in April 2023.
Transportation: 15.9% of the average annual expenditure for American consumers. Groceries: 8.6% of the average annual expenditure for American consumers. Healthcare: 8.1% of the average annual expenditure for American consumers. Utilities: 6.6% of the average annual expenditure for American consumers.
The January 2024 data show a small increase in dollar spending but a tiny decline in inflation-adjusted expenditures.
“The U.S. has seen a particularly strong GDP recovery, and inflation has cooled sooner and more quickly than in other large, advanced economies. And the increase in real wages is unique to our country's recovery,” Treasury Secretary Janet L.
Among the richer countries, we are on course to being one of the poorer. The picture is particularly distressing when you compare where we are with our nearest neighbour. As of 1981, per capita GDP in Canada was 92 per cent of that of the U.S.; by 2022 it had fallen to just 73 per cent.

How much does the US owe China?
China is one of the United States's largest creditors, owning about $859.4 billion in U.S. debt. 1 However, it does not own the most U.S. debt of any foreign country. Nations borrowing from each other may be as old as the concept of money.
Overall, in the calendar year 2023, the United States' Nominal GDP at Current Prices totaled at $27.360 trillion, as compared to $25.463 trillion in 2022. The three U.S. states with the highest GDPs were California ($3.8 trillion), Texas ($2.56 trillion), and New York ($2.15 trillion).
The Federal Reserve Board of Governors (Board of Governors), the Federal Reserve Banks (Reserve Banks), and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) make decisions that help promote the health of the U.S. economy and the stability of the U.S. financial system.
The survey, which polled over 4,000 adults in the U.S., finds that three quarters of working Americans (74%) say they are stressed about their personal finances these days, which is slightly higher than the last Your Money survey (70%), and more than half of Americans (61%) consider themselves to be “living paycheck to ...
The average American net worth is $1,063,700, as of 2022. Net worth averages increase with age from $183,500 for those 35 and under to $1,794,600 for those 65 to 74. Net worth, however, tends to drop for those 75 and older.
