Can I close my bank account from any branch?
If the bank branch has access to your account information, you normally could close your account at that branch. Of course, it depends on your bank's rules and what they have disclosed to you about how to close your account with them.
Visit Bank
You cannot close your bank account online. You need to visit your home branch where you opened the account. So you need to walk into the home branch where you have an account and request them for account closure.
Typically, you must call or visit your financial institution to do this. However, some banks and credit unions will let you close an account online. Be sure to download any statements you may need for purposes such as completing your tax return before the old account is closed.
Contact Your Bank
Although financial institutions allow you to do this online, they may require you to make a phone call to customer service or a visit to a local bank branch. Some banks and credit unions may require you to fill out an account closure request form or submit a written request.
Visit any U.S. Bank branch and speak with a banker. We encourage you to make an appointment to allow time for questions and processing.
Fortunately, closing a savings or checking account that's in good standing won't hurt your credit in any way. However, there are a few things to consider before closing your bank account to make sure it's done the right way and doesn't end up causing any credit-related problems.
To close your bank account, you must write an application letter to the manager of your respective bank branch. Along with the application, you must also include/attach the documentation required to shut your account, such as a passbook, chequebook, ATM card (debit/credit), identity proof and so on.
There is no need to mention reason to close your account. Bank just asks you for a requesting letter. However some banks will charge if you close the account within one year or so.
Most of the time, yes, but your bank or credit union may require you to settle your balance before allowing you to close an account that is overdrawn. If you want to close your account, you should call your bank or credit union or go in person and give them your account information.
You can request the closure of an account through telephone banking. Following your request most accounts can be closed overnight, however some account closures can take up to 7 working days before being completed.
What happens to your money when you close a bank account?
You'll get your money back (usually). You may receive a check in the mail for the remaining balance, unless the bank suspects terrorism or other illegal activities. You can also go to a branch and receive a cashier's check for the account balance. Customer service may not be very helpful.
Inactive Accounts
Generally, an account is considered abandoned or unclaimed when there is no customer-initiated activity or contact for a period of three to five years. The specific period is based on the escheatment laws of each state.
Some banks require accounts to be open for a minimum time period, and if they're closed before then, charge a fee to recoup some of their costs for opening and closing the account. For example, US Bank and PNC both charge $25 if the account is closed within 180 days of being opened.
BB&T (BBT) and Citibank charge a $25 fee if the account is closed within 90 days, while U.S. Bank, HSBC (HBC), and PNC Bank (PNC) charge customers a $25 fee to close an account that has been open for fewer than 180 days.
Contact Your Bank: Begin by contacting your bank to express your intention to close your current account and open a new one. You can do this by visiting a local branch, calling customer service, or sending a secure message through your online banking portal.
Your bank may notify you that it has closed your account, but it normally isn't required to do so. The bank is required, however, to return your money, minus any unpaid fees or charges. The returned money likely will come in the form of a check.
Can one party with a joint bank account close the account? Generally, no. Banks require that both account holders consent to closing the account. It may be possible in some cases for one account holder to remove themselves from the account, though, without the explicit consent of both parties.
Banks will need to provide you with 90 days' notice – up from 30 – before they close your account, if the new rules are adopted. This will give you more time to go to the Financial Ombudsman Service and challenge the decision, or to find a new bank. Banks will also have to spell out why they are closing your account.
Having an overdrawn account could prevent you from closing an account. You'll need to get your account to a zero balance or higher before the bank will process your closure request.
Is there a fee to close a bank account? Generally, no. The main exception is if you close an account shortly after opening it. Some banks and credit unions charge what's called an early account closure fee that kicks in if you close an account within a time frame such as 90 or 180 days.
How do I close a checking account?
- Shop for a new bank account. ...
- Open and fund the new account. ...
- Switch automatic deposits. ...
- Switch automatic payments. ...
- Leave enough money in the old account for pending transactions. ...
- Once transactions clear, you're free to close.
Bank May Issue a Paper Check
Some banks choose to issue a paper check to the individual who owns the closed account. Other times, the company or individual with whom you set up direct deposit may get their funds back from the bank and then may make the payment via a paper check.
Over the Phone – Cancel your U.S. Bank checking account by calling the company's customer service phone number at 800-872-2657. You will have to provide your personal and account information to verify your identity. At a Branch – Walk in or make an appointment at a branch location to close your account.
It doesn't cost anything to close a Bank of America account, but it might cost you money to keep that account if they're charging you monthly maintenance fees. You can transfer money out of your account by way of ACH. Consider a new option that offers free ACH transfers and no monthly service fees.
You can close your Bank of America account by visiting a branch, calling the helpdesk or by mailing in a closure request. So you've made the decision to close your Bank of America account.
